Remember when your dad said, “Son, you could be whatever you wanted if you just set your mind to it,”? Well, Jonny O’Callaghan, you proved daddy correct. Frontman of hardcore-punk band Liferuiner, one half of the house duo Real Talk, Jonny O’Cal is never satisfied with just settling with one genre. Right here is proof: Siberia, Jonny’s post-rock project.

Now, all bands have a couple of bands that they are influenced by. The one that pops out most in my mind here is Explosions In The Sky, especially off of The Earth Is Not A Cold, Dead Place. Now, that’s not to say that this band is a direct ripoff, they just have a similar kind of sound, especially the guitar. BUT, the track that screams to be played is really “Liars Worth Loving”. Seriously, it takes off from the rest of the album; it’s so passion-filled and intense that it’s a nice juxtaposition to the rest of the demo. The last song, “Track 3”, is even more different, encompassing post-rock with a little touch of drone in the background, giving a nice taste of each.

Even if I hated Jonny’s guts, I’d still feel obligated to put this up, but he’s really a great guy and  now has another great side project on his hands. This little demo here, though isn’t much, leaves a really good impression for great things to come. I think that’s one of the great things about post-rock: punk’s dead, hip-hop always dwells on it’s past leaders such as Biggie and Tupac, but post-rock keeps looking to the future. Siberia’s recording some new material really soon, so there’s a lot to look forward to.

Rating: 3/5 kegs. A little short, but a good start nonetheless.
